Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint
Mr. Stelios Evangelides, to act as President of the
District Court of Kyrenia in the Colony of Cyprus,
with effect from the 30th May, 1960.

Under the power and authority vested in him
by the Courts of Justice Laws, 1953 to 1959, His
Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint
Mr. Ulfet Emin, to act as a District Judge of a
District Court in the Colony of Cyprus, with effect
from the 30th May, 1960.

No. 556. Meteorological Office.
VACANCY.
Applications are invited from suitable candidates
for a vacancy in the temporary post of Meteoro–
logist. The successful candidate will be required
to serve on contract for a period of two years in
thefirstinstance.
2. The salary of the post is £1,236X42—1,404
X48—£1,548
per
annum plus cost-of-living allow–
ance at the rate approved by Government from time
to time, the present rate being 2 8 £ % of salary.
3. Duties : The duties of the post are as
follows
: —
{a) T o investigate the adequacy of meteorolo–
gical observation stations and the reliabi–
lity of the observations made ;
{b) To consider the best form for publishing
past and current lr.eteorological records ;
(r) To investigate the several needs of the
technical departments concerned for clima-
tological research, including work on the
following subjects : —
(i) weather forecasting for farmers and
for predicting forest fire hazards ;
(ii) the delimitation of climatic zones for
use in conjunction with soil and vege–
tation surveys and for guidance in the
introduction of exotic crop varieties,
tree species and livestock breeds ;
(iii) rainfall studies, particularly in con–
nection with hydrological surveys and
soil conservation work ;
(iv) microclimatic measurements, in relation
to such problems as the effects of
windbreaks, forest regeneration, im–
provement of pastures and control of
the breeding of locusts ;
{d) to advise in detail on the measures needed
for the reorganisation of meteorological
service and on the best means to enable
climatological research to be carried out
in future ;
(c) to train the staff in the Meteorological Office,
and
(/) to control the staff of his office and to per–
form any other duties which may be
assigned to him by the Minister of Agri–
culture and Natural Resources or any other
duly authorized officer.
4. Qualifications required : The candidate should
hold a Physics or Maths Degree of a recognized
university. In addition the candidate should have
had a knowledge of theoretical and agricultural
meteorology as well as experience in synoptic meteo–
rology both in observing and forecasting. Spe–
cialised training in applied climatology as well as
practical experience in a Meteorological Office would
be an advantage.
5. Applicants, who should be Cypriots, should
submit their applications on Form Gen. 6 to the
Administrative Officer, Ministry of Agriculture and
Natural Resources, not later than the 14th June,
1960. Applicants already in Government service
should submit their applications through the Head
of their Department.

INSPECTOR O F S C H O O L S .
V A C A N C Y .
Applications are invited for the post of Inspector
of Schools (Philological Subjects).
Duties : To inspect teachers of his own and allied
subjects in Secondary Schools ; to advise and assist
teachers ; to prepare schemes of work, text-books,
etc., as required ; to organize and take part in
training courses in his own and allied subjects ; to
perform such administrative duties as may from time
to time be required of him by the Chief Education
Officer and the Senior Inspectors of Schools.
Qualifications : Diploma of Philosophy of a Greek
University, certificate as a trained teacher or such
professional training as may be deemed appropriate ;
a minimum of 15 years' teaching experience in
Secondary Schools.
Salary Scale: £900X30—1,020X36—1,200 per
annum.
In addition a variable cost-of-living allowance, the
present rate being 2 8 £ % of salary,
will
be paid.
