General Information regarding
the industry and the possibilities
of its development
In the sea round Cyprus there are plenty of
fish but unfortunately the Cypriot is not a fisher–
man. Few of them will go out except in the very
best of weather and iu consequence the supply of
fish is not equal to the demand. T h e number of
boats has certainly increased of late years but there
is still plenty of room for improvement. T w o
Italian sailing trawlers did good work during tha
year and demonstrated the practicability of increa–
sing the production of this very valuable article
of diet by more up-to-date methods than those
practised by Cypriots.
Tlie spongefishinghas since the year 1903 been
entirely under the control of the Government.
Thefishingis principally carried on by fishermen
from the Greek Islands who arrive in the Island in
the spring andfishthrough the summer.
Each boat must be provided with a licence
according to capacity, the following fees being
charged:—
£ s.
(a) For each boat fitted with
machine diving apparatus, crew not
exceeding 30 persons. ...
1 0
(b) For each boat fitted with the
'•Feme*." apparatus only, crew not
exceeding 15 persons. ... ... 1 0
(r.) For each boat with naked
divers, crew not exceeding 8 persons. 1 0
(d) For each boat with harpoon
(kamaki) crew not exceeding 6
persons. ...
... ... - 10
In addition to the licence fee Machine Boats
and lioats wich divers pay 25<?'<j of their catch to
Government aud Harpoon Boats 20 ?6.

from the Greek Islands worked from M a y to
September. N o Cyprus boats fished during 1929.
The total catch was 1,447 okes.
