In the sea round Cyprus there are plenty of
fish but unfortunately the Cypriot is not a fisher–
man. Few of them will go out except in the very
best of weather and in consequence the supply of
fish u not equal to the demand. The number of
boats have certainly increased of late years but there
is still plenty of room for improvement. T w o
Italian sailing trawlers did good work during the
summer months at Limassoi and demonstrated
the practicability of increasing the production of
this very valuable article of diet by mora up to
date methods than those practised by Cypriots.
The sponge fishing has since the year 1903 been
entirely under the control of the Government.
Thefishingis principally carried on by fishermen
from the Greek Islands who arrive in the Island in
the spring andfishthrough the summer.
Each boat must be provided with a licence
according to capacity, the following fees being
charged:—
100 0
50 0
(a) For each boat fitted with
machine diving apparatus, crew not
exceeding 30 persons.
(ft) For each boatfittedwith the
•'Fernez" apparatus only, crew not
exceeding 15 persons.
(*) For each boat wich naked
divers,crew not exceeding 8 persons.
id) Kur each boat wich harpoon
(kainaki' crew not exceeding 6
persons.
In 1927 4 Machine Boats, 4 •'Fernez"' Boats,
I boar, with naked divers and 7 Harpoon Boats
from che Greek Islands, and 2 Cyprus Harpoon
Boats, worked from May to September.
The total catch was 5,957 okes which was all
taken away from the Colony and sold for about
J£2 an oke'.
