VT. Is penal labour—that is, labour by treadmill,
crank, or shot drill—in force ?
Penal labour is in force principally in the form o
stone-breaking ; treadmill cannot be resorted to owin
to want of appliances. Crank in force as punishmen
labour, but it is seldom used.
Vll. if so, during what periods of imprisonments,
in respect of what classes of prisoners, and during how
many hours, is such penal labour enforced ? In
.--tating hours of treadwheel labour, give,first,the total
time on and off at the wheel, etc.; secondly, the length
of spells and intervals of rest.

VIII. What kind of labour, other than penal labour.
is in use ?
Shoe-making, tailoring, carpentering, bakin*-
cooking, washing, masonry, weaving, brush an!
stocking-making, whitewashing, cleaning, road-makins
stone-breaking, carpet-making.
IX. If the prisoners are employed beyond the walls
of the gaol, state—
1. Ou what kind of work they are so employed ?
2. H o w are they supervised ?
3. H o w many escapes of prisoners, while being em–
ployed beyond the gaol, have taken place during each
of the last three years ?
Cultivating Prison Farm, building ; a few convict
are emplo3*ed on conservancy, fetching stone for stone
breaking and carrying away manure from Police stables
road-making, public garden, cleaning and waterin,
Government plantations and trees. Jn 1914 a priso;
was established at Rizokarpaso ; and in 191S one a
Chrysokhou ; the Forest huts in these 2 villages wen
set apart and gazetted as Prisons, and one foreste
appointed as convict guard in charge of each Prison
All short sentence prisoners from the neighbourin:
country are detained in these Prisons and are empiovei
in the Forest Gardens and plantations there.
On 10th February, 1920, a Prison was established a
Dikellia in the building known as " Dikellia Quarautim
Station.'' Convicts from Paphos, Limassoi and Fama
gusta Districts whose sentences are 6 months an<
under 2 years are drafted to this Prison. They ap
employed in re-aforestation under the Forest Depart
ment.
A temporary Reformatory Prison was established a
Athalassa Farm on the 16th April, 1920, where Juve
nile convicts are employed on husbundry and othe
farm works.
The Famagusta. Larnaca. and Kyienia Prisons wer
abolished on the 19th Sept., 1920, and all convict©
prisoners of over 7 days are transfered to Centra
Prison.
