I. If the prison is on a separate system, is the
separation complete . And, if not, what is the separa–
tion enforced by day and night respectively ?
II. If not on ibe -separate system, what provision
is there for the -uperviaion o* the prisoners while in
association ?
The Central Prison, Xicosia, is on the separate system,
but prisoners are in association in the work shops.
In the District Prisons each prisoner is kept in a
separate cell when there is room sufficient to allow of
this, and they work in associated gangs during the day.
By Warders and Sentries constantly patrolling the
corridors and passages and inspecting the wards and
cells where prisoners are confined.
III. H o w many celb are there; and how many
associated wards ?
IV. Taking the ausraje number of prisoners in gaol,
how many cubic fi:t of space are there for each prisoner
during the hours of sleep ?

Long Sentence Division :
Block No. 1, 100 cells.
Block Xo. 2, 05 cells, also 5 Crank Cells, 2 Dark Cells
and 1 Hospital Ward for 12 Patients.
Punishment Block, 14 celLs.
School Building, containing 2 separate rooms each room
measuring 26 feet by 18 feet.*
Short Sentence Division :
Block Xo. 1, 94 Cells.
Block Xo. 2, 99 Cells, also 5 Crank Cells, and 3 CelU
for prisoners under death sentence.
Female Division:

The doors of the cells and wards of the District Pnscns
are constructed either of iron bars, or thick wooden bars,
thereby affording a plentiful supply of fresh air.
