V. H o w are the prisoners classified?
VI. Is penal labour—that is, labour by
treadmill, crank, or shot drill—in force?

such penal labour enforced? In stating hours

Penal labour is in force principalis- in the
form of stone-breaking; treadmill cannot be re–
sorted to owing to want of appliances. Crank
in force as punishment labour, but it is seldom
used.

Shoe-making, tailoring-, tree-planting, car–
pentering, baking, washing, dyeing, masonrv.
weaving, brush an<: stocking making, white–
washing, cleaning. road-making*. stone-
breaking, broom-making, cieauing. mar-ma kino*.
Cultivating Prison Farm, building; a few
convicts are employed on conservancy, fetch–
ing stone for stone-breaking and carrying
away manure from Police stables, road-making.
Public Garden, cleaning- and watering Govern–
ment plantations and trees.

By prison warders and armed escorts of
Police, and in one case bv a convicc g-uard.
3. H o w many escapes of prisoners, while
being employed beyond the gaol, have taken
