United Nations system for all matters re1ated to trans–
national oorporations.

major oomponent of the work
of UNCTC is its technical co-operation programme
designed

assist countl'ies, particuJ.arly developing
countries, in strengthening their own
caρabilίties
in
dealing with transnational oorporations.
The technical oo-operation programme consists essen–
tialIy of advisory projects and training projects. Both
are undertaken
ίη
response
to
the
specίfic
requests of
host oountry
goverηrnents.
Under the advisory
Ρ
rojects,
UNCΓC
provides
assistance to host oountries
ίη
(i)
the formulation
ΟΓ
revision of their
ρο
licies, laws and regulations reIating
to foreign investment, acqu.isition of foreign technoIogy,
and the forms of participation by transnational oorpo–
rations

the economies of such oountries;
(ίί)
the
strengthening of institutional mechanisms and
admiηis­
trative procedures for screening and monitoring the
activities of transnational oorporations; and
(ίίi)
the
evaluation and negotiation of business arrangements
with transnational corporations
ίη
respect of part.icular
projects in various
seιctors
such as petroleum,
mιnmg,
manufacturing, forestry, fisheries, rtourism and agricul–
tural commodities.
Thetraining projects generally
coηsist
of workshops
organized for the benef·it

host oountry officials
οη
matters related to regulating and negotjating
witlι
trans–
national

rporations. These workshops may address
gen~ral
issues arising fl10m deaNngs with transnational
corporations or may be speoialized workshops focusing

the specific negotiation and regulatory issues perti–
nent

mining, forestry, pharma–

all from the

of safeguarding the
legitimate interests of the host country whi1e
maintaining adequate incentives for trans–

(6) The negotiation and draft:ing of the above–
mentioned
agreemenιts.

International and national taxation, international
tax implications of dealing wJith transnati.onal
oorporations especially

specific
sectΌrs
such
as mining and
ρetroleum.
(8) The formulation of projects involving the parti–
cipation of transnational oorporations
ίη sρecific
sectors,
subsectΌrs
and industries such as petro–
leum, mining, fisheries, tourism, manufacturing,
banking, forestry,
agricuIιture ,
agribusiness,
petrochemicaIs, pharmaceuticals, capital goods
and the like.
UNCTC's oonsultant requirements for thc above pur–
poses include economists, engineers, lawyers,
pΓOfessio­
nal accountants, finanoial anaIysts, tax experts , industry
specialists, managers, admin'istrators, and the Iike, with
expertise

the above fields.
