V. How are the prisoners classified ?

classes according to their sentences.
VI. Is penal labour—that is, labour by treadmill,
crank, or shot drill—in force ?
No.
VII. If so. during what periods of imprisonments, gee answer to question No. VT.
in respect of what classes of prisoners, and during how
many hours, is such penal labour enforced ? In
stating hours of treadwhesl labour, give,first,the total
rime/m and off a.t the wheel, etc. *, secondly, tbe length
of spells and intervals of rest.
VIII. What kind of labour, other than penal labour,
is in use
Shoe-making, tailoring, carpentering, baking
cooking, washing, masonry, weaving, stocking-making
white-washing, cleaning, road-making, stone-breaking
carnet-making, farming.
[X. If the prisoners are employed beyond the walls
of the gaol, state—
1. On what kind of work they are so employed ?
Cultivating Prison Farm: building; convicts are
employed on conservancy, fetching stone for stone-
breaking, cleaning Police barracks, public garden,
cleaning and watering Government plantations and
trees, cleaning Government Offices, excavating ancient
monuments and fortifications and cleaning Larnaca
Hospital.
The Juvenile Convict Settlement at Athalassa has
been declared a Reformatory and here Reformatory
boys and adolescent prisoners are employed on hus-
bandrv and other farm works.
2. How are thev snoervised ?
By prison warders and escorts of Police, and in some
cases by convict guards.
3. How many escapes of prisoners, while being em–
ployed beyond the gaol, have taken place during each
of the last three vears ?
In 1935, five.
In 1936, three.
In 1937. three from Famagusta Prison, two from
Athalassa Reformatory, two from working party Govern–
ment Offices, one from Police Escort, Kyrenia, two from
Police Escort, Nicosia, two from Prison Escort, from
Famagusta to Nicosia, and one from Mental Hospital;
all recaptured.
