crank, or shot drill—in force !

VII. If so, during what periods of imprisonments,
in respect of what classes of prisoners, and during h o w
m a n y hours, is such penal labour enforced ! In
stating hours of treadwheel labour, give,first,the total
time on and oS at the wheel, etc.; secondly, the length
of spells and intervals of rest.

Shoe-making, tailoring, carpentering, baking,
cooking, washing, masonry, weaving, stocking-makings
white-washing, cleaning, road-making, stone-breaking]
carpet-making, farming.
IX. If the prisoners are employed beyond the walls
of the gaol, state—
I. On what kind of work they are so employed I
Cultivating Prison Farm; building - convict* are
employed on conservancy, fetching stone for stone-
breaking, cleaning Police barracks, public garden,
cleaning and watering Government plantations and
trees, cleaning Government Offices, excavating ancient
monuments and fortifications and cleaning Larnaca
Hospital.
The Juvenile Convict Settlement at Athalassa has
been declared a Reformatory and here Reformatory
boys and adolescent prisoners are emploved on hus–
bandry and other farm works.
2. H o w are they supervised I
B y prison warders and escorts of Police, and in some
cases by convict guards.
3. H o w many escapes of prisoners, while being em–
ployed beyond the gaol, have taken place during each
of the last three vears ?
In 1934, two.
In 1935, five.
In 1936, one from Athalassa Reformatory and two
