Forest*
The present area of State forests is 027 sq. miles representing
1 S % of the total area of the island. Approximately 1 4 % of
these forests are situated in the hill catchment areas. T h e
remainder consist of scrub forests or plantations in the plains.
The principal forest species are :—
Pinus
; Pinus nigra, var. caramanica ; Cupressus
sempervirens; Cedrus breiifolia ; Platanus orientalus ;
Alnus oriental'.*; Quercus alnifolia ; Arbutus andrachne
Juniperus species.
T h e main hill forests are managed primarily for -water
conservancy. They are also the principal sources of timber.
The lowland forests and plantations yield a large part of the
island's fuel and charcoal supply.
Local timber and forest industries have been entrusted to
private enterprise, which has developed rapidly in recent years.
T h e Forest Department's sawmills, of which there are five in
operation, are leased to private timber companies.
Approximately 2 5 . 5 % of the island's timber consumption
is supplied from the State forests.
It is expected that the outturn of local timber will be increased
as more of the main forests come under working plan organization.
* Permits for small quantities issued to villagers.
