these forests are situated in the hill catchment areas. T h e

T h e principal forest species are :—
Pinus halepenais ; Pinus nigra,'vox. caranianica ,*' Ctvprtssits
sempervirens ; Cedrus brevifolia ; PkUanus orientalis;
Alnus orientalis ,r Qitercus alnifolia • Arbutus andrachne ;

Local timber and forest industries have been entrusted to
private enterprise, which has developed rapidly in recent years.
T h e Forest Department's saw-mills, of which there are five in
operation, are leased to private timber companies.
Approximately 2 5 . 5 % of the island's timber consumption
is supplied from the State forests.
It is expected that the outturn of local timber will be increased
as more of the main forests c o m e under working plan organization.

In the sea round Cyprus there are plenty of
fish but unfortunately tlie Cypriot is not a fisher–
man. Few of them will go out except iu the very
best of weather and in consequence the supply of
tish is not equal co the demand. The number of
boats has certainly increased of late years but there
is still plenty of room for improvement. Three
Italian and one Cypriot sailing trawlers did good
work during the year and demonstrated the
practicability of increasing the production of this
very valuable article of diet by mora up-to-date
' methods than those practised by Cypriots.
The sponge fishing has since the year 1903 been
entirely under the control of tlie Government.
The nailing is principally carried on by fishermen
from the Greek Islands who arrive in the Island in
the spring aud tish through the summer.
Eaclt boat must be provided with a licence
according to capacity, the following fees being
charged:—
(a) For each boat fitted with
machine diving apparatus, crew not
ezceedin*; 30 persons
(b) For each boat fitted with che
"Fernez" apparatus only, crew not
exceeding 15 persons
(<-• For each boat with naked
divers, crew not exceeding 8 persons
(Ji For each boat with harpoon
(kamakij, crew not exceeding 6
persons ...
... ... - 10
In addition to the licence fee Machine Boats
and Boats with divers pay 2596 of their catch to
Government and Harpoon Boats 20 «w.
N o s-oonses were fished durinar the vear 1935.
