MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS.
Duties and Powers :—
The regulation of the cleanliness, sanitation and conservancy of the town or village comprised within the municipal
limits, and all matters relating to the same ; the control of the erection, alteration and repair of buildings, and the
demolition of buildings unfit or dangerous for habitation ; the supervision and control of bakeries, and the inspection
of food-stuffs and liquids intended for h u m a n consumption ; the regulation of the weighing, measuring and testing
of goods ; the grant of profession and trade licences, dog licences, theatre and cinematograph licences, building permits,
etc.; the provision of storage accommodation for explosive substances and petroleum ; the establishment of poor-
bouses ; the provision of slaughter-houses, and the regulation of the slaughter of animals for food ; the construction,
improvement, upkeep and lighting of streets ; the regulation of the traffic in the streets ; the provision of a good and
sufficient suppl\- of water ; the contribution towards the cost of maintaining public hospitals, and the provision and
maintenance oi ini'ant welfare centres within municipal limits ; the construction of works of pubhc utility ; the
contribution towards or the undertaking of the cost of charitable and educational schemes or institutions ; the
acquisition of lands or buildings for any purpose of pubhc utility ; the establishment and regulation of municipal
markets and parks or other places of recreation ; and, with the approval of the Governor, the making of bye-laws for
the regulation of the various matters coming within the scope of their functions, and the imposition of fees or charges
in connection therewith.
Sources of revenue .—
Rates (at present not levied) on immovable property within municipal limit3 ; fees for theatre and cinematograph
licences, dog licences and building permits ; water rates ; slaughter-house fees ; weighing and measuring fees ;
hawking fees ; fees and tolls of municipal markets ; tolls on certain foreign goods ; rents from municipal markets and
buildings ; fees for the storage of inflammable substances ; and fines recovered under the Municipal Corporations
Laws and bye-law.s.
THE CYPRUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Objects and duties :—
To watch over \rnl protect the general ixitor^";; of commerce and industry Li Cyprus, and to collect information
from foreign manufacturers and traders which m a y assist the development of commerce and industry ; to establish
means whvrebv the transaction of commercial business m a y be facilitated ; to encuurage and promote n e w commercial,
agricultural and industrial enterprise in Cyprus ; to intervene, as an advisory body, with the local Government in all
matters affecting the general interests ot Cyprus in commerce and industry ; when requested, to undertake by arbitration
and conciliation the settlement of commercial disputes ; to place local merchants in touch with British and foreign
manufacturers and merchants and vice vtrsa ; to correspond with foreign Chambers of Commerce and similar bodies
and private firms for the purpose of obtaining and giving information on the standing and reliability of merchants -.
when requested, to deal with all claims, applications, suggestions, petitions, etc.. addressed to the Government on
subjects of a commercial or industrial nature, whether of general or personal i:v.-.r..z ; and to issue certificates of origin
for articles produced or manufactured in Cyprus, certificates of membership of tbe Chamber, certificates of commercial
standing, and any other certificates required by traders.
Sources of revenue :—
Subscriptions of members, annual subsidies granted by Municipal Corporations, and fees for the issue of various
certificates and in respect of applications for commercial information.
