T h e present area of State forests is 6.33 3q. miles representing
1 8 % of the total area of the island. Approximately 1 4 % of
these forests are situated in the hill catchment areas. T h e
remainder consist of scrub forests or plantations in the plains.
T h e principal forest species are :-—
Pinus halepensis ; Pinus nigra, var. carantanica ; Cupressus
semprrrvirens ; Cedrus brevifolia ; Platanus arientalis;
Ainu* orientalii; Quercus alnifolia ; Arbutus andrachne ;
Juniperus species..•; ,

. T h e -main hill forests are m a n a g e d primarily for water
conservancy. T h e y are.also the principal sources of timber.
T h e lowland forests and'plantations yield a large part of the
island's fuel and charcoal supply. '* • •
" '••' •
Local timber and forest industries have been entrusted to
private enterprise, which has developed rapidly in recent.years.
T h e Forest Department's sawmills, of which there are six in
operation, are leased to private timber companies.
Approximately 2 5 . 5 % of the island's timber consumption
is supplied from the State forests.
It is expected that the outturn of local timber will be increased
as m o r e of the m a i n forests c o m e under working plan organization.
* Permits for small quantities issued to villagers.

In the sea round Cyprus there are plenty of
fish hut unfortunately the Cypriot is not a fisher–
man. Few of them will go out except iu the very
best of weather and iu consequence tbe supply of
fi3h is not equal to the demand. T h e nnmber of
boats has certainly increased of late years but there
is still plenty of room for improvement. Three
Italian and one Greek sailim-- crawlers did c*ood
jwork during the year and demonstrated the
. practicability of increasing the production of this
! very valuable article of diet by more up-to-date
; methods than those practised by Cypriots.
The sponge fishing has since the year 1903 been
I entirely under the control of the Government.
