MUNICIPALITIES

OTHEK LOCAL BODIES
T h e Municipal Councils (or Commissions, as tho case m a r be) are charged with one general superintendence and control
(excepting Police supervision) of the town, village or area defined as cue Municipal limits, in manner regulated by various
enactments:—
Their duties include -.—
T h e construction and maintenance of streets, open spaces, public gardens and plantations, sewers and drains, public
fountains, privies aud urinals. The lightin<- of the Municipal area. The cleaning of all streets and open spaces, and the
removal of night soil and refuse of houses. Thu provision of a good and sufficient supply of water for the use of persons dwelling
within the Municipal limits. The provision of slaughter houses and the regulation of the slaughter of animals for food. T b e
establishment and regulation of markets, and the regulation of tbe sale of perishable goods and inflammable and explosive
substances. T h e inspection of food offered for sale and the destruction of sucn as is unfit for consumption. The supervision
of weights aud measures aud the provision of public weighers aud measurers. The prevention of noxious and offensive trades
and the abatement of nuisances. The regulation of the construction of buildings and the demolition of buildings unfit for
habitation or in a dangerous condition. The provision of storage accommodation for inflammable and explosive substances
and generally the doing of such acts as will promote the health, comfort and convenience of the people residing within the
Municipal limits. For these purposes the Municipalities have power, with the approval of the Governor, to impose
rates aud other fees and charges as set out under " Sources of Revenue " and to make bve laws for regulating tbe various
matters coming within the scope of their functions.

Rates ou propsrtj withiu tue Municipal limits, but, except in rare instances, such a race has not been imposed; fees on the
slaughtering of auimals; tolls and stallages in markets; rates on trades and professions; weighing and measuring fees; fees for
storage of inflammable aud explosive substances*, fees for building permits and legalization of contracts; rents of Municipal
properties andfinesand penalties from prosecutions under the Municipal Laws.
