T h e Municipal CounoiU (or Commissions, aa tho case m a y be) are charged with;fche general saperinteadence aad coacrol

enactments :—
Their duties include :—
The construction :uul maintenance of streets, open spaces, public gardens and plantations, sewers and drains, public
fountains, privies aud urinals. T h e lighting of the Muuicipal area. The cleaning of all streets and opeu spaces, and the
removal of nizht soil and refuse of houses. Tlie provision «>f a good and sufficient supply of water for the use of persons dwelling
within the Municipal limits. T h e provision of slaughter houses and tbe regulation of the slaughter oc animals for food. The
establishment and regulation of markets, and tho regulation of tbe sale of perishable goods and inflammable and explosive
substances. The inspection of food offered for sale aud tiie destruction of sucn as is unfit for consumption. T h e supervision
of weights aud measures and the provision of public weighers and measurers. The prevention of noxious and offensive trades
and the abatement of nuisances. The regulation of che construction of buildings and tlie demolition of buildings unfit for
habitation or in a dangerous condition. The provision of storage accommodation for inflammable and explosive substances

Municipal limits. For these purposes the Municipalities have power, with die approval of the High Commissioner, to impose
rates and other r'ees and charges ;*s -et out under * Sources of Revenue" ami co make bye laws for regulating the various
matters coming within die scope of their functions.

Rates ou property wichin the Municipal limits, but, except iu rare instances, such a rate has not been imposed; fees on the
slaughtering ot

auimals: tolU and stallages in markets; rates on trades and professions; weighing and measuring fees; fees for
storage of iudammable aud explosive substances; fees for building permits and legalization of contracts; rents of Muuicipal
properties and fines and penalties from prosecutions under the Municipal Laws.
