7.—A summarised statement of .my developments iu the agricultural, forestal, fishing, mining, and other industries
of tlie Colony during the year under review, with a statement as to progress up to date. A special account should be
given of Government grants or other action for the development of the uatural resources and industries of the Colony.
Cyprus is essentially an agricultural rather than an industrial country. Development
has been considerable in the following industries : mining (especially copper pyrites, chrome and
umb<*r). wine and spirit making, fruit preserving, flax, cotton, silk, leather-curing and gypsum.
Animal breeding, especially of horses, cattle, pigs, mules and donkeys, is progressing satis-

factorily.

Re-aflbrestation under the Foreat Department is being pushed forward rapidly.
The importation of mechanical tractors, agricultural machinery and chemical manures
continues to increase.
Cyprus-grown tobacco is now finding a market on the Continent and experiments are beino-
made to cultivate the Latakia variety.
Among minor industries, bee keeping on modern methods is developing. The Cyprus
bee is noted for its value in the apiary.
Activity continues to be shown in the industry of weaving. A great varietv of silk and
cotton fabri(? of excellent quality, is manufactured -ind finds a ready sale in both European and
local markets nor.withsianding th« fact that the manufacture is conducted in a primitive method
by the means of hand looms which are made locally. A modern silk-filature has been erected
by Government and a privately crossed filature is in course of erection. Three flax-scutching
factories are in operation.
Furniture making and shoe making have progressed considerably.
The art of embroidering is also well advanced, a great number of w o m e n and girls are
engaged on needlework and lace-making. The latter is in wide demand abroad.
N o Government grants for the development of industries have been made during the year.
