V. How are the prisoners classified ?

VI. Is penal labour—that is, labour by|treadmill,
crank, or shot drill—in force ?
Penal labour is in force principally in the form of
stone-breaking; treadmill cannot be resorted to owing
to want of appliances. Crank in force as punishment
labour, but it is seldom used.
VII. If so, during what periods of imprisonments,
in respect of what classes of prisoners, and during how
m a n y hours, is such penal labour enforced . In
stating hours of treadwheel labour, give,first,the total
time on and off at the wheel, etc.; secondly, the length
of spells and intervals of rest.

VIII. What kind of labour, other than penal labour,
is in use ?
Shoe-making, tailoring, carpentering, bakings-
cooking, washing, masonry, weaving, brush and
stocking* making, whitewashing, cleaning, road-making,
stone-breaking, carpet-making.
IX. If the prisoners are employed beyond the walls
of the gaol, state—
1. On what kind of work they are so employed ?
2. H o w are they supervised !
3. H o w many escapes of prisoners, while being em–
ployed beyond the gaol, have taken place during each
of the last three years ?
Cultivating Prison Farm, building; a few convicts
are employed on conservancy, fetching stone for stone-
breaking and carrying away manure from Police stables,
road-making, public garden, cleaning and watering
Government plantations and trees. In 1914 a prison
was established at Rizokarpaso ; and in 1918 one at
Chrysokhou ; the Forest huts in these 2 villages were
set apart and gazetted as Prisons, and one forester
appointed as convict guard in charge of each Prison.
All short sentence prisoners from the neighbouring
country are detained in these Prisons and are employed
in the Forest Gardens and plantations there.
O n 10th February, 1920, a Prison was established at
Dikellia in the building known as " Dikellia Quarantine
Station." Convicts from Paphos, Limassoi and Fama–
gusta Districts whose sentences are 6 months and
under 2 years are drafted to this Prison. They are-
employed in re-aforestation under the Forest Depart–
ment.
A temporary Reformatory Prison was established at
Athalassa Farm on the 16th April, 1920, where juve–
nile convicts are employed on husbandry and other
farm works.
Tbe Famagusta, Larnaca, and Kyienia Prisons were
abolished on the 19th Sept., 1920, and all convicted
prisoners of over 7 days are transferred to Central
Prison.
By prison warders and armed escorts of Police, and
in some cases by convict guards.

1921, three prisoners escaped during the vear ending
31st December, 1921. One from the Larnaca Prison
on the night of the 21st March, 1921; he was recaptured
on the 2Sth March, 1921. T w o juvenile convicts
escaped from Athalassa Reformatory Prison on the
night of the 15th October, 1921; one was recaptured
on the 18th October, 1921, one is still at large
