VI. Is penal labour—that is, labour by treadmill,
crank, or shot drill—in force ?
Penal labour is in force principally in the form
stone-breaking ; treadmill cannot be resorted to owii
to want of appliances. Crank in force as punishmei
labour, but it is seldom used.
VII. If so, (a) during what periods of imprisonment,
(b) in respect of what classes of prisoners, (c) and during
bow m a n y hours, is such penal labour enforced . In
stating hours of treadwheel laborx, give,first,the total
time on and off at the wheel, etc.; secondly, the length
of spells and intervals of rest..

VLTI. What kind of labour, other than penal labour,
is in use ?
Shoe-making, tailoring, carpentering, baking
cooking, washing, masonry, weaving, brush an<
stocking-making, whitewashing, cleaning, road-making
stone- breaking carpet-making.
IX. If the prisoners are employed beyond the walls
of the gaol, state—

Cultivating Prison Farm, building; a few convicti
are employed on conservancy, fetching stone for stone
breaking and carrying away manure from Police stables
road-making, public garden, cleaning and watering
Government plantations and trees. In 1914 a prisor
was established at Rizokarpaso ; and in 1918 one at
Chrysokhou ; the Forest huts in these 2 villages were'
set apart and gazetted as Prisons, and one forester
appointed as convict guard in charge of each Prison,
All short sentence prisoners from the neighbouring
country are detained in these Prisons and ore employed
in the Forest Gardens and plantations there.
O n 10th February, 1920, a Prison was established at
Dikellia in the building known as " Dikellia Quarantine
Station." Convicts from Paphos, Limassoi and. Fama–
gusta Districts whose sentences are 6 months and
under 2 years are drafted to this Prison. They are
employed in re-aforestation under the Forest Depart–
ment.
By prison warders and armed escorts of Police, and
in some cases by convict guards.
1917-18, one.
1918-19, three.
1919-20, four prisoners escaped from the Central
Prison during the night of the 20th December, 1919.
One was re-captured on the 26th December, 1919, and
one on the 2nd February, 1920. T w o being still at
large.
Profits are paid into the Treasury or are accounted
for by the Public Works Department.
