The Municipal Councils (or Com–
missions, as the case m a y be) are charged
with the general superintendence and con–
trol (excepting Pohce supervision) of the
Town, Village or area defined as the Muni–
cipal limits, in manner regulated, by
various enactments.—
Their duties include:—
Tbe construction and maintenance of
streets, open spaces, Pubhc gardens and
plantations, sewers and drains. Public
fountains, privies and urinals. The light–
ing of the Municipal area. T h e cleaning
of all streets and open spaces, and the re–
moval of night soil* and refuse of houses.
Tbe provision of a good and sufficient sup–
ply of water for tbe use of persons dwelling
wichin the Municipal limits. T b e provision
of slaughter houses and the regulation of
the slaughter of animals for food. The
establishment aud regulation of markets,
aud the regulation of the sale of perishable j
goods and inflammable and explosive sub- j
stances. The inspection of food offered for I
sale and the destruction of such as is unfit ;
for consumption. Tbe supervision of |
