The Municipid Couaciis • (or (Joih-
mifstons, as the case may hei are charged
with the
superintendence and con–
trol (--xeeptiug Police supervision) nf the
Town, Village or area defined as the Muni–
cipal limits, in manner regulated by
various enactments.—
Their duties include :—
The construction and maintenance
of streets, open spaces. PubUc gardens
and plantations, sewers and drains. Public
fountains, privies and urinals.
The lighting of the Municipal area.
The cleaning of all streets and open
spaces, and the removal of night soil and
ivfnso <>f houses.
The provision of a •rood and sufficient
supply of water for the use of persons
dwelling within the Municipal limits.
The provision of slaughter houses and
the regulation of the slaughter of animals
for lo<-«i.
The establishment and regulation of
markets, ami the regulation ot the sale
of perishable goods aud inflammable and
explosive substances.
The inspection of food offered for sale
and the destruction of such as is unfit for
consumption.
The supervision of weights and
measures .ind the provision of Public
weighers and measurers.
The prevention of noxious and offen–
sive trades ami the abatement of uuisauces.
The regulation of the construction of
buildings and the demolition of buildings
unfit for habitation or in a dangerous con–
dition.
The provision of storage accommoda–
tion for, inflammable and explosive snb-
st; aires.
And generally the doing of snch acts
as will promote the health, comfort and
convenience of che people residing within
the Municipal limits.
Fm- these purposes the Municipalities
have power, with the approval of the
Migii''ommissioner. co impose rates and
other fees :\in\ charges as set out under
•'Sources of Revenue" and to make Bye-
Laws for regulating the various matters
coming within the scope of their functions.
