Powers
and
Duties.
The Municipal Councils (or Com–
missions, as the case may be) are charged
with the general superintendence and con–
trol (excepting Police supervision) of the
Town, Village or area defined as the Muni–
cipal limits, in manuer regulated by
various enactments.—
Their duties include:—
The construction and maintenance
of streets, open spaces, Public gardens
and plautations, sewers and drains, Public
fountains, privies and urinate.
The lighting of the Municipal area.
The cleauing of all streecs and open
spaces, aud the removal of night soil and
refuse of houses.
The provisiou of a good and sufficient
supply of water for the use of persons
dwelling within the Municipal limits.
The provision of slaughter houses aud
the regulaciou of the slaughter of animals
for food.
The establishment and regulation of
markets, and the regulation of the sale
of perishable goods and inflammable aud
explosive substances.
The inspection of food offered for sale
and the destruction of such as is unfit for
consumption.
The supervision of weights and
measures aud the provision of Public
weighers and measurers.
The prevention of noxious and offen–
sive trades and the abatement of nuisances.
The regulation of the construction of
buildings and che demolition of buildings
unfit for habitation or in a dangerous con-
dicion.
The provision of storage accommoda–
tion for inflammable and explosive sub–
stances.
And generally the doing of such acts
as will promote the health, comfort aud
convenience of the people residiug within
the Municipal limits.
For these purposes the Municipalities
have power, with the approval of the
High Commissioner, to impose rates and
other fees and charges as set out under
"Sources of Revenue" and to make Bye-
Laws for regulating the various matters
coming within the scope of their functions.

the provisions of Order of
