T h e Municipal Councils (or Com–
missions, as the case m a y be) are charged
withfchegeneral superintendence and con–
trol (excepting Police supervision) of the
Town, Tillage or area defined as the Muni–
cipal limits, in manner regulated by j
• various enactments,—

Their duties include:—

' T h e construction and maintenance \
I of streets, open spaces, PubUc gardens j
| and plantations, sewers and drains, Public ,
i fountains, privies and urinals.

j Tbe lighting of the Municipal area. '
! * The cleauing of all streets and open !
j spaces, aud the removal of night soil aud ,
i refuse of houses.
| The provision of a good and sufficient •
• supply of water for the use of persons •
dwelling within the Municipal limits.
The provision of slaughter houses aud

for food.

The establishment and regulation of :
| markets, aud the regulation of* the sale '
of perishable goods aud inflammable aud |
explosive substances.
The iuspectiou of food offered for sale '
aud fche destruction of such as is unfit for

The supervision of weights and
measures and fche provision of Public
j weighers and measurers.
The prevention of noxious and offen-
| sive trades and the abatement of nuisances.
The regulation of the construction of
: buildings and the demolition of buildings
• unfit for habitation or in a dangerous cou-
j dition.
! The provision of storage accommoda-'
j tion for inflammable and explosive sub- j
stances.

,' A n d generally the doing of such acts *
j as will promote the health, comfort aud ,
! convenience of the people residing within !
} the Municipal limits.

; For these purposes the Municipalities !
| have power, with the approval of the j
High Commissioner, to impose rates and '
other fees aud charges as set out under
"Sources of Pievenue" aud to make Bye-
Laws for regulating the various matters
coming within the scope of their functions.
