The Municipal Councils (or Com–
missions, as the case m a r be) are charged
with the general superintendence and con–
trol (excepting Police supervision) of the
Town. Village or area defined as tlie Muni–
cipal limits, in manner regulated by
various euactmeius.—
Their duties include :—
The construction aud maintenance
of streets, open spaces, I'ublic gardens
and plantations, sewers and drains, Public
fountains, privies and urinals.
The lighting of the Municipal area.
The cleaning of all streets and open
spaces, and the removal of night soil and
refuse of houses.
The provision of a good and sufficient
supply of water for the use of persons
dwelling within the Municipal limits.
The provision of slaughter houses and
the regulation of the shi lighter of animals
for food.
The establishment an.l regulation of
markets, and the regulation of the sale
of jwrishiilile goods and inflammable and
explosive substances.
The iusjx-ctioii of food offered for sale
and the destruction of such as is unfit for
consumption.
The sujiervision of "weights and
measures and the provision of Public
weighers and measurers.
The prevention of noxious and offen–
sive trades and the abatement of nnisam-es.
"Tlie regulation ofthe construction of
buildings and the demolition of buildings
unfit fur habitation or in a dangerous con–
dition.
The provision of stnmjre accommoda–
tion for inflammable and explosive sub–
stances.
And generally the doing of such acts
as will promote the health, comfort and
convenience of the jieople residing within
the Municipal limits.
For these purposes the Municijialitie*-
have jH.wer. with the approval of the
High -t'oiinnissioiMT. to impose rates and
other fees and charges as set out under
"Sources of licxeime" and to make Jive-
Laws for ivgnhitinj: the various matters
i-oiuii-g within the s.-oj-c of their functions.
