SPECIFICATION OF TAXES, DUTIES, &C.
BEDEL-I-EUSHER.
(Equivalent of Tithes.)
An annual payment taken in lieu of tithe on tbe conversiou of Arazi-Mirie (arable
State land) to another category, as, for instance, on the erection on it of butldiugs,
threshing-floors and sheep-fclds, or on its conversion into forest or grazing ground.
BEDEL ASKERI.
(Military Exemption Tax.)
Two sbilliugs aud four and a half copper piastres per head for all male inhabitants
of the Island, not being foroiguors, of not less than 18 year3 or more than GO years
of age.
EXEMPTIONS :—
Priests of all religious deuominatious ; all persons who are exempt from Military
Service by Turkish law either by personal service or by payment made before the passing
of Ordinance No. V. of ISTo ; all persons mentally or physically incapacitated from
Military Service; and all persons in the Military or Civil employment of the Government
of the Island.

SHEEP AND GOAT. TAX.
'2h silver piastres (S^c.p.) per head yearly on every sheep and goat one year old
and upwards.
The tax on goats may be increased and thac on sheep decreased by the High
Commissioner in Council provided that uo increase shall be made in tbe total amount
receivable as calculated upon the basis of the last preceding official returns of the
numbers of sheep and goats in tbe Islaud. . . .
Sheep and goats that are concealed with a view to avoid enumeration are charged
double tax.
