BEDEL-I-EUSHER.
(Equi*.
of Tithes.)
A n annual payment taken in lien of tithe on the conversion of Arazi-Mirie (arable
.v.r.tc land) to another category, as. for instance-, on the erection on i: of buildings,
threshing-floors and sheep-folds, or on its conversion into forest or grazing ground.
BEDEL ASXERI.
(^Military Exemption Tax.)
Two shillings and four and a half copper piastres per head for all male inhabitants
of the Island, not being foreigners, of not less than 18 years or more than GO years
of age.
EXEMPTIONS :—
Priests of all religious denominr.:ions ; all persons who are exempt from Military
Service by Turkish law either by person;:! service or by payment made before the passing
of Ordinance !Nb. Y. of 1878; all persons meutaliy or physically incapacitated from
Military Service ; and all persons in the Military or Civil employment of the Government
of the Island.
SHEEP AXD GOAT TAX.
21 silver piastres (3£c.p.) per head yearly on ever}

The tax on goats may be increased and that on sheep decreased by the High
-Commissioner in Council provided that no increase shall be made in the total amount
.receivable as calculated upon the basis of the last preceding official returns of the
numbers of sheep and goats in the Island.
Sheep and goats that are concealed?witb a view to avoid enumeration are charged
double tax.
From 1st March, 1892, an extra tax of 3} c.p. on erery goat is charged to defray the
expense of Field Watchmen under Law XIII. of 1691.
By Notification No. 2900 in Gazette No. 484, of 7th June, 1895, the assessment of
this Field Watchmen tax has been suspended.
PIG TAX.
4 j copper piastres per head yearly on every pig over three mouths old.
Concealed pigs are subject to the same penalty as sheep and goats.
